Ultrasonic systems in biogas plants

Use of high-performance ultrasonic to increase efficiency

To increase environmentally friendly energy production from biogas, industrial and municipal biogas plants rely on established ultrasonic systems from SONOTRONIC.

The integration of a BIOSONATOR high-performance ultrasonic system into existing biogas plants improves the economic efficiency and the results of the biogas plants. Efficiency is increased by intensifying the fermentation process, producing more biogas and simultaneously increasing the methane content in the biogas (up to 70 % CH4 content).

Advantages for biogas plants with the use of ultrasonic technology

  • Increase of the economic efficiency of biogas plants
  • Increase of biogas production (up to 25 %)
  • Reduction of digestion time (up to 60 %)
  • Savings in substrate or reduction of non-fermented substrate (up to 30 %)
  • Reduction of digestate to be disposed (up to 30 %)
  • Treatment of biosolids with ultrasonic
  • Generation of cavitation in biosolids
  • Change of biomass structure
    • Splitting of organic cells, bacteria and fungi by high shear forces
    • Release of cell contents
  • Simplification and intensification of the fermentation process

Good reasons for biogas plant operators to use ultrasonic technology in the future

  • Improve operating results
  • High variation and low degradation rates (in practice sometimes less than 50 %)
  • Increasing importance of energy production through fermentation of organic substrates (biosolids) in so-called biogas plants
  • High potential of biogas production from biosolids in Germany
  • Low economic efficiency of biogas plants despite the special remuneration regulation of the new energy supply law
    • Increases in the price of raw materials
    • Low efficiency (low biogas yield per mass of biosolids used)
  • Increase of economic efficiency possible by:
    • Intensification of the fermentation process
    • Increase of the methane content in the biogas

How are the high-performance ultrasonic systems integrated into biogas plants?

It is usually sufficient to treat a partial volume of the fermenter or secondary fermenter contents with ultrasonic and return it to the fermentation process. This volume flow usually corresponds to 30 % to 50 % of the daily fed substrate quantity. The standard ultrasonic system (connecting load 5 kW) is very compact with a base area of 1.45 m x 0.25 m and thus requires little space.

On site, only inlet and outlet connections as well as a power and water connection are required. The ultrasonic systems themselves are usually in operation for 24 hours. Benefit from our many years of experience with the installation of biogas and waste fermentation plants at home and abroad.
